Before I Self Destruct – 50cent

50centFirst off let me say that I didn’t get all the tracks so couldn’t do a full album review…my bad.

Secondly, people have said that because I’m not the biggest Fifty fan, maybe this might be a little biased, maybe I’m not being fair and maybe you wanna listen for yourself…or maybe I’m a professional and you should trust my fu%*ing judgement!! Ya Heard?!

The Invitation

First off the intro track is pretty much what you’d expect from an intro, light, simple beat. Easy laid back rhymes (delivered in a trademark 50 growl though). But if an intro is a heads up on what to expect from the rest of the album, then all we got to look forward to is 54.3 minutes of 50 talking guns money and violence. All cool, but he ain’t in the same place he was when he started this game, so man needs to expand his range…just a little bit.

Verdict: Nothing new here, but it is only the beginning, sounds more like a first mixtape tune though.

Prize For Most Unusual Bonding Line: Nigga we from the same hood! – We come from the same shit!/You got gonorrhoea too; we fucked with the same bitch!

Then Days Went By

This track is a 50 talking about his come up back in the day, singling out some of the incidents that, I guess shaped his life. This is textbook Fiddy. Banging production (courtesy of Lab Ox), simple rhyming flow, slow ass flow and a catchy sing along hook to draw you in. surprisingly though, for the most part, it works. Never gonna be a chart topper, but will most probably be a fan favourite.

Verdict: Not the most incisive or cutting flows or even the most introspective “Back in the day” track but still enough to draw you in.

Prize For Catchiest Hook: I see niggas getting rich and days went by, and days went by, and days went by/I was tired of not having shit, then days went by, then days went by, then days went by…etc etc etc

Death To My Enemies

Once again, sick ass production, Dre and Mark Batson hit you off with something you’d expect to hear from Wu Tang…and once again 50 wastes it. Same flow that he used on the last two tracks, same content, same guns and butter! All said and done that makes for one forgettable track.

Verdict: Limited range makes this a limited tune.

Prize For Best Sly Dig to Jay-Z (or Lil’ Wayne): This ain’t the “Carter” nigga; THIS IS SPARTA/IT’S HARDER! I DIE AND BE A MARTYR/ RESPECT ME LIKE YOUR FATHER!

So Disrespectful

This is it right here! Everybody knows that 50 undeniably has swagger and here he brings it out. This guy is at his best bragging and dissing, and here he does both. He calls out Jay, Young Buck and a few sideswipes at The Game, even going hard on his baby mama. Not as funny as he can be but the rhyming is on point and it’s just entertaining to hear and imagine the look on these dudes faces when they hear it!

Verdict: this is why people love Fifty, putting other niggas down and bigging himself up. Plus Tha Bizness handles His business on production

Prize For Worst English Accent and Best Game Diss: I’m international, I’m never home mayne/ I’ve been gon’ so long my accent changed/ Better watch who you fuck with mayne/ Or you gon’ make me carve your ass up now, straight/ Come on Game you’ll never be my equal/ Your homie shoot dogs, my nigga shoot people

Psycho

This here is an average beat from Dre, but you hear it and you think “50 and Em? They can rock this no problem!” But there is a problem, it’s nothing new, 50’s biting Em’s style and Em ain’t bringing out any of the best gems of his career, so where does that leave us? Disappointed.

Verdict: I’d rather listen to Renegade

Prize For Most Honest Lyrics: Man these are average raps/I’m keepin’ the savage batch hidden/The can of whoop ass with the Shady aftermath lid.
